Windsurfing Boards - Getting Started with Windsurfing

Even if you haven’t been on windsurfing boards for years and you want to get back into it, or you have always wanted to try this fascinating, fast paced activity, you’ll find that now is the time to get started! Windsurfing is generally defined as using a windsurf board, also known as a sailboard to skim along the surface of the water. Though many people think that the use of a windsurfing board looks a lot like a sailboat, you’ll find that the maneuverability that you get on a windsurfing board is like nothing a sailboat can offer.

Some people who love this sport simply love the feel of having their water craft respond to their slightest motion, while other people are very much interested in the sport and the showy inverted loops, spinning maneuvers and freestyle moves that can be accomplished. Though competently using a windsurfing board is something that can take time, you’ll discover that this is a skill that is entirely possible to learn. You might like the idea of speed sailing, course racing, wave sailing or free style, but at the end of the day, it all boils down to one person on a windsurf board.

When you are interested in getting started with windsurfing, you’ll find that you are going to need to be in fairly good shape and have a relatively good degree of coordination. Similarly, you are also going to need to be willing to look silly. No one is going to get out there and instantly be good at it, and you’ll find that starting slowly and not biting off more than you can chew is essential when you are looking at learning the basics. There are many classes out there where you can learn to wind surf. You will discover that learning in a river or a lake is ideal, but it is possible to learn in the ocean where the wind is blowing towards shore and at less than twelve knots.

Let’s take a look at the windsurfing boards themselves. The windsurfing board will have a fin on the back to steer, and it should be sturdy enough to support your weight. The windsurfing sail is what will propel you through the water and if you are just getting started with windsurfing, you’ll discover that having a smaller sail is preferable in terms of maneuverability. The harness that you will use to steer the sail is known as the boom and the mast is what the sail mounts to. The mast is on a swivel base where it attaches to the board and you can move freely from this joining. This is really all that a windsurfing board is, and though it is simple, you already know that there are many different things that you can do with it.

If you are just getting started as a windsurfer, you’ll find that there are many factors that determine your success on the water. You will need to worry about your posture and how it pertains to keeping your windsurf board steady, and you will also need to think about your stability on the board as well as your range of vision. The trim of the sail is another important factor as is the force that you bring to bear. Remember that these are the essentials that you are going to need to study as you go through your lessons. Take some time and really consider how you are doing and regard your performance critically. Take a look at what you are doing when you go to use a windsurf board; the more aware you are of your body, the better off you are going to be.

When you are looking at making sure that you are going to be able to get the most out of your windsurfing, remember that getting the right windsurfing board is essential. Ideally, you will have an instructor who can guide you. Chances are good that they will recommend your basic flat board, though if you are hoping to spend more time racing, there are course boards, as well as wave boards and slalom boards. Consider the rocker of the board, which is the curvature of the board from the nose to the tail. With more rocker, you will be able to turn more easily, but with a flatter board, you will get to go faster.

Do you want a hard windsurfing sail or a soft sail? This question is a personal one and will tend to reflect your own tastes. With a hard sail, you’ll get better power and speed, but a softer sail will give you more control. You may also want to look for sails that have factors of both in them. Ideally, you will be able to see the windsurf board before you buy it; there are many specialty stores, and you’ll discover that there are many different choices for you to make. Keep your intent in mind as well as your budget, and you are going to be able to get the board that will suit your needs.

Are you ready step up and try windsurfing? There are so many advantages to this wonderful sport and you can get in contact with your body and the water in a way that is difficult otherwise. Have some fun and find out what kind of lessons you can take up. There are lots of choices available to you, so don’t miss out.

Let me preface this story by saying that I am not posting this to scare anyone or discourage any one from the sport of windsurfing. I am merely pointing out the fact that it is important to be educated on windsurfing, and even on the windsurfing board you choose before you get into the water.

This article was reported by the Southern Reporter, about a man who was found along the Fife Coast after he had been reported missing.

“The discovery was made on the shoreline at Kirkcaldy on April 25, 18 days after Mr Dawes was last seen windsurfing north of Eyemouth.”

I don’t know about you guys but this is very heartbreaking. I can only hope that Mr. Dawes was educated on windsurfing even though - “Mr Dawes was said to have been an experienced windsurfer”, before he set foot out on sea.

What I am trying to relay is the importance of knowing what you are doing before you actually do it. I know the thrill that windsurfing brings to millions of people, but it is not worth risking your life all because people didn’t decide to read anything about the sport. I hope all that read this article take advantage of the Start Windsurfing Right offer I have to the left of this article. It is a great book for beginner’s who want to get started the right way windsurfing. And it isn’t a bad read for the experienced windsurfer who just needs a refresher.

As you already know the windsurfing season has gotten underway as I mentioned in my last post. Today I will give you some brief updates on some of the action that has taken place.

To kick things off, the morning started with registrations. This year was a  good turnout with a number just under 400 sails, and 200 windsurfing boards. With that many boards, and sails at sea, you can just imagine what the scene loked like.

As I mentioned one of the standouts to take place in this years competition was Antoine Albeau who did not disappoint the judges.

“Antoine Albeau appeared immune to the pressure of windsurfing’s media scrutinizing his every move, as he seamlessly extended his respective runs of form from 2008, to reserve places in the eliminations final eight”

The races went back and forth all evening, with no one guaranteed a spot in the finals. With so much talent this year it will be hard to tell who will walk away the victor.

Stay tuned for more action, and updates. To read the full article click here.

To all the fans of windsurfing, the 2009 season is getting underway off the shores of Austria and Hungary.

“Running from the 5th to the 10th of May, the Dwarf8 PWA Surf World Cup takes place on Lake Neusiedl’s 315 square kilometers of fresh water, located between Austria and Hungary. With two predominant wind directions (N-NW and S-SE) the lake can produce anything from howling side-shore gales to super technical cross-offshore conditions, leaving sailors at the mercy of the ever-changing Atlantic fronts that track over central Europe”.

I don’t know about you, but how cool would it be to take part in something like this. Not only would you be able to catch some great waves, but you would also get the chance to tour the country as well.

The Dwarf8 PWA, has consistently attracted a large international following, and this year will feature 72 of the best boarders from around the country. Not only will they bring thier different styles to the event, but thier will be a plethora of cool windsurfing boards as well.

Thie event will also feautre some well known names like 3 x World Champion Antoine Albeau, Bjorn Dunkerback, and Kevin Pritchard just to name a few.

I was browsing the web the other day and came across this great article about Greg Martin a 23 year old guy who didn’t give up on his dream to windsurf, and loves his windsurfing boards.

“After a three year stint on the UK professional tour, the need to earn money got in the way and his surfing had to take a back seat while he established up his own building business”.

I was glad to see that even though sometimes we have to put our dreams on hold, they are always still attainable.

Greg, a self employed builder who specialises in brickwork and plastering - is one of the UK’s up and coming talents in the windsurfing sport. Greg will also be participating in the UK Windsurfing Championships being staged at Rhosneigr, aka (Rhossy) off the west coast of Anglesey from May 15-17.

As part of his arsenal Greg will be using the following tactics to wow the judges - ‘Big Back Loops’ ‘Cha Choos’ Wave 360s’ and ‘Takas’.

I loved reading about Greg and his passion for windsurfing boards.

Get inspired by Greg and read his full story here http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/4343145.Haslingden_builder_on_quest_for_windsurfing_glory/
